And while it offers some new features, you can pretty much read our reviews of the previous games and substitute "10" for "8000" or "9000."
#CHESSMASTER 10 TH EDITION UPDATE#
Chessmaster 9000 added even more teaching tools and brought back the much-missed Chessmaster Live multiplayer options.Ĭhessmaster 10 includes yet another update for the King AI system, more learning courses, a less cumbersome interface and a pair of 3D glasses.

And while that game's switch to 16-bit graphics made it stand out a bit from the previous versions, you'd be hard pressed to say that the improvement made that big of a difference in terms of your enjoyment of the game. Chessmaster 8000 added the new King AI system and introduced a lot of teaching tools.

So how do you keep the series fresh? Going back over previous versions, I can definitely see some incremental improvements.

And where Microsoft's Flight Simulator series necessitates almost yearly editions to keep pace with improvements in graphics technology, chess games don't (and shouldn't) sell on the strength of their visuals. While it makes some sense that successive iterations of Madden can tweak the action somewhat, that flexibility just doesn't exist in the more abstract, straightforward world of chess. Each edition of Chessmaster is better than the last but the world of computerized chess hardly requires four separate editions over five years. So while we can say that Chessmaster 10th Edition is the best chess game in town, it simply doesn't add enough over any of the last two versions to make it a necessary upgrade. No animated opponents, no voice animation, no ambience. The essential contradiction at the heart of this review is this: While I think Chessmaster is simply the best chess program available, the small list of new features added to each iteration make it hard to recommend the new version over the previous one. Though preferably, once you are in the game, this personal touch is replaced with a cold and clinical presentation. This adds a personal touch and allows you to connect with your virtual opponent. Though players can also read player bios to see what their playstyle is, if speed chess is their preference and so on. The player can alter difficulty as expected from pure beginner to grand champion. The variety of options is staggering considering the very simple premise that the game is built upon.

The AI opponents in this title are the true shining aspect for the franchise. Asking players to truly master the game in this interesting but criminally short section.

Pro commentary is added and goes through the ‘attacking chess’ mantra. This also features a section of puzzles and drills much like the fun section too. Allowing beginners and intermediate players to develop their skills and knowledge of the game. This features commentary and annotations that analyse the psychology of chess. Then for the adult players, there is an Academy. It’s a great way to draw young players to the classic game. The opponents are also low levelled, use fun and animated chess sets and players receive certificates for completing sections. The ‘fun’ modes seem to act as both a tutorial and a kid-friendly section where basics and puzzles are used to teach core chess skills and tactics. The game offers a variety of modes for every type of player. These are fantastic as a whole and really give a phenomenally realistic chess setting to hone your skills. Meaning you’ll switch to the more standard aesthetics. This offers a 3D rendered setting that is interesting in the short term but will become obnoxious and tiresome pretty quick. Speaking of weird gimmicks, the game also has a 3D feature-complete with glasses that are enclosed in the game case. Arguably this is a little out of place in such a grounded and simplistic game, though it makes the stakes that little bit higher and gives the player something to strive for which is appreciated if a little bit weirdly executed.

Ranked match wins allow players to earn rewards in the form of premium chess boards and pieces. The title offers a sense of progression for players that many would have assumed to be missing from a title such as this.
